roses are beatiful and can give much pleasure but they have thorn's and that's ok if they are handled properly.

not a bad coparison to life in france

I have been here 7yrs have encountered the thorn's but had lots of pleasure from the roses.

No it is not all roses. Why should it be? France is not a third world country. It has good points and bad points, What YOU make of it depends on you and your personal circunstances.
Do not come here with no money and no job and expect to live the life of Riley as some expect to.
Do your sums and make sure you will have enough to set yourselves up and have a good sum left over for the unexpected. Think about why you want to move. If you are unhappy where you are you will probably bring that with you.
We have been here eight years and love it here but we also loved Wales where we used to live.

I agree with thegoodlife, there are thorns but life here is incomparable to the UK. We try to tell our friends in the UK that our nearest traffic lights are 25kms away and they find that incredible. I died twice in 2006 and am still here but in the UK I would have died only once. I am on 100% Carte Vitalle or as I call it Carte Fidele, but the people here are more polite, friendlier than England. The other evening I passed a gang of youths in the street and said "bonsoir" and they all replied "bonsoir Monsieur" There would have been no point in mugging me because my wife does not allow me to have money.
We did have a little indifference when we first moved in because everbody knew that we are English but since people have discovered that we speak fluent French, the locals have all accepted us. The cost of living is expensive here if you live the English way of life as we do, but the French are much thriftier than us and will not waste anything. Imagine trying to live in England the French way, ie a bottle of wine with each meal etc. My wife wants to go back to England at Xmas but I certainly don't but as I'm not allowed to be left on my own I have no choice.
No, I have no intention to return to live in Englqnd:

I think Parsnips made a very good point in that it is only a good place to live here if you are not constantly worrying how to pay the bills. It is always far more expensive than you ever imagined it to be , and the poor exchange rate and rubbish interest rates do not help at all to those who thought they had planned it well with enough capital to back them up. The longer you live here , the more to grips you get with all the paperwork and the french way of doing things, the language gets better too, but speaking personally, whilst not wanting to wish our time away, we will be pleased when we are pensioners and have a guaranteed income again.

We have been here nearly 3 years have immersed ourselves totally and generally love it, love the weather in the summer, love the cosy log fires in the winter, but you do need to forget the english way of spending money, keeping up with the Jones's etc and to be happy live the french way, don't worry if you haven't got the latest furniture, car, gadgets, etc, do grow your own veg, be resourceful and be happy to be in a country where politeness and good manners are a must. France to me is the England of my childhood, where it was safe to walk around, quiet roads, no yobs or gangs, and nobody worrying about what you had or didn't have.

A few days back in England is enough to convince us how good it is here. We're going back for 4 days to visit family before Christmas, but not looking forward to either the long journey or the chaos that is England, we'll be counting the days till we're back here.

Bonne Chance
