Help Noises in the wall.

dorothysgirl writes in Pets & Animals

Hi

We appear to have some sort of creature in the walls of the house. The noises can be heard day and night and are 'thumping', banging noises. It's not the scratching noise you would expect mice to make and it seems too heavy for birds, although the offending area is adjacent to the hangar. It is very alarming, particularly at night.

If anyone has any suggestions what it might be and, more importantly, how to get rid of it they would be much appreciated!

Thanks

Sandra

Hi - is the wall plasterboarded? We had something similar and established that it was a loir(e) (edible dormouse) - they are beautiful with great big eyes and big ears, they're not harmful, but as you say, noisy.

We bought an electric "plug-in" rodent repellent whioch emits a high frequency noise, we, our dogs, cats, etc. can't hear it, but rodents (and apparently some insects) can't live with the noise, so they find new homes. We bought ours off Amazon UK and I think it cost about £24 plus delivery - well worth it, as we don't seem to have any problem after about 6 weeks of use. Good luck

Day and Night according to Sandra, so not a Loir or any other strictly nocturnal creature...
....narrows it down quite a lot eh?

Not experienced by us, but looked it up on Google. We had genets here when we first came 5 years ago, the houe hadn't been lived in for years. They didn't appreciate our invasion and disappeared quite soon after we arrived - se were quite sorry really because they are so beautiful!

Fouine is unlikely in the daytime apart from near dawn and dusk BUT it would be useful to know the type of cavity, the height, what access there is and just how 24/24 it is active.

I think it's probably a fouine (stone marten). Can you identify it by any pooh it leaves? We have one at the moment and it is driving us crazy. Think it's had babies behind wall in loft. We have asked french people how to get rid of them and answers are ....shoot it, trap it and release it at least 5km away, put a poisoned egg out for it, find where it's coming in and block it off, napthalene mothballs as they can't stand the smell (apparently these are now banned in france because they are extremely dangerous to humans) or drive it away with noise. Because it has babies at the mo we are trying the noise option hoping she will move them somewhere quieter. Have been playing the radio loudly and non stop. Doesn't seem to be working though. Apparently there are anti marten sprays you can buy but don't know if they work. Some high frequency machines are supposed to drive them away but again do they really work? Not sure what are next step is as we haven't slept properly for days and feeling very grumpy about it. Worried what damage it could be doing and praying it doesn't start to stink like I have read about. Because it appears to be feeding babies it seems to be getting more and more active and not just in the middle of the night (perhaps it's dancing along to the music?!) Have also read they will probably all depart once the young have been reared but that's about september and can't bear the prospect of even another week of it.
