French traffic rules, how far from the back of a car/van can a load protrude?

French traffic rules
3 metres and IIRC if it's moe than 1 metre you need a piece of red material on the end to make it more visible to those behind you.
A little more research suggests that if it's more than 1 metre then you need a "reflective panel" during the day and a red light in the dark..... suffice to say that I've only ever seen the French using bits of red rag.
