Hello all,

My first posting on Angloinfo but I have used it as a source of information for a little while now. Does anyone have any idea how much it is to remove asbestos ceiling from a house. Unfortunately, it appears to be "friable" type and the room is upstairs - fortunately only one room is affected (probably put in as false ceiling in the 1970s). The room size is approximately 6m x 5m and there appear to be three panels. I appreciate that I can get a quote from a recognized company but want a ballpark figure to know how much we are talking about before I get contractors in. It is possible to leave it in situ but the better half doesn't like it! And over time it will most likely deteriorate. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Asbestos removal is extremely expensive to remove, if done under controlled conditions. There is nothing wrong with asbestos, its a fantastic material, so long as its not disturbed. My suggestion would be to encapsulate it, one thing asbestos won't do is deteriorate, not in our lifetime, its rock fibre.

Thanks very much for your prompt reply and assistance. I agree with your comments about asbestos (apparently over 3000 different products) but on this occasion the asbestos appears to be used as the adhesive and it is the ceiling panel that will deteriorate and as a consequence may release the fibres. I'm only best guessing as I am unable to ascertain enough information other than it is friable and contains asbestos. It looks similar to chipboard in appearance. I thought it would be expensive to remove and as a last resort may encapsulate it but this would need to be done both underneath and on top because of dampness from the roof. One year ago the report stated that it was in good condition and was safe if untouched.
