Many thanks for your replies. When I transferred the money to France to buy my house a few years ago, I just went into my English bank asked what rate they would give me, which was good and transferred the money on the spot. I was hoping to do the same here going back to England. It was the cheapest and easiest at the time.I thought it may not be so straight forward here.

friends of our have just gone through a similar thing. Their house sales agent suggested shopping round before the sale and booking the currency rate in advance. she allso suggested that the sale monies went straight to currency company from notaire to save time.

I know that she recommended a company to use, but also made sure they shopped round to check best prices.

when we bought here yes we did the same trusted our friendly bank and boy did they see us coming, once in france the costs seemed worse, everyone who touched the transaction took a chunk and although we started out with enough money transferred it did not arrive with the same value

have fun with your research

I would recomend using currencyfair, it is easy to open an account and they will give you a very reasonable rate. It is however based on the excahnge rate at the time you exchange.
