Car wheel bearing removal tool

netrooky writes in Cars, Bikes & Driving

I need to change the front wheel bearings on my car.

I need to get the bearing out of the hub and insert the new bearing

Does anyone have a wheel bearing removal and insert tool that I can borrow or buy.

In over 40 years of doing my own repairs I have never needed a special tool for doing a front wheel bearing replacement.  I use a square ended punch or an old screwdriver and hammer to drive the bearing race out from the back and then a suitable sized socket to drive the new one in (or press it in using a large vice).  If your car needs a special removal tool then perhaps if you mention what the car is someone may be able to offer some advice.

I understand exactly what you are saying Underdog - Brittany

I need to ensure that I don't damage the hub hammering the old bearing out and same when installing the new bearing - I don't own a large vice to use as you suggest.

The bearing removal tool is a heavywight  threaded bar with exact size fitting heavy duty drifts to fit the exact bearing size. Place the exact fitted drift on the old bearing and by tightening the screw it pulls the bearing out of the hub, revese the procedure to drift the new bearing into the hub. car is a BMW X5.

This method then ensures that the bearing and hub is in no way  stressed or damaged

Fair enough.  So you will require a tool specific for that vehicle.  Not much chance of finding one in private hands.  Good luck.

Take the hub to any small garage who should have a hydraulic bearing press. It is easy enough using the right size drift (socket spanners work well for this) to press the bearing out squarely without damaging the housing and press the new one in. Shouldn't cost much. I have a bearing press and would do it for you but unfortunately I am still in the UK at the moment and I guess you can't wait for me to move out :-).

If you can find one do you have an impact gun to drive it? If the bearing is tight in the housing it may not be possible to use the tool with ordinary spanners. The listing does say "for use with impact tools". Still say a hydraulic bearing press is the easy option.
