Motorhome Campsites/Aires in the Charente Maritime

matou writes in General

Hi All,

We have aquired a motorhome and are hungry for a weekend away, hopefully this weekend.  As we are around 2 and a half hours from the coast (Royan/La Rochelle) we thought that it might be nice to visit for the first time.

I know we are slightly off season but can anyone advise of campsites, activities, etc?

Thanks in advance

Not in time for this month but for future. Join Passion France. There is a joining fee of 20ish euro and you get a booklet that gives 4000 or so growers in france who welcome you for free. Vineyards, nut farms, fish farms , cheese producers et etc.

Also buy a booklet of the aires. Sold in most supermarkets on the magazine racks.

Enjoy your new van it is a great way to see France

Most camp sites will be closed now ( typical french!) but if you search for campsites in the area you wish to visit, you might be lucky.

If you pm me with the area I can look through our camping car gazette, or if you are anywhere near Confolens you can have it.

regards, Fred ch.

We know La Palmyre very well as we have a holiday home there. The campsites are all closed but there is plenty of room for motorhme's. Some of the car parks near the beach now allow motorhome's for a fee of about 7Euros a night, they are not allowed there during the summer. There were quite a few parked there the other weekend.

There are still campsites open - we have 2 earmarked on the Ile de Re which are open until early and mid-November, and are also hoping to go this weekend.  There are websites if you Google e.g. 'campings hiver' or look on the website of the French camping association, FFCC, which it is also worth joining.

Motgagne sur Gironde, the aire is the whole of one side of the locked harbour basin and is a very atractive site.

Power available and very reasonable price. Some of the restaurants on the other side of the basin may be shut at this time of the year though.

Not in 17 but close is Coulon (not far from Niort), a very nice aire next to the town and Venise Verte. No power but a very pleasant aire. Even has wi-fi, free for the first 30 mins!
